Illimani anchors the southern end of the cordillera standing somewhat apart from the nearest, much smaller, peaks. A large, complex massif, Illimani has many faces, ridges and routes.

Mururata is the other significant mountain in the area. The normal route up the large glacier obvious from La Paz is easy but long. The southern aspect holds a few more technical routes.
